The state of Death

SOCT Grow 4

The state of Death

Just what happens when you die? Do you simply sees to exist? Do you have some part of you that actually survives? And if so just where do you go? In this short SOCT paper we help you understand this very important subject. Please read, pray and share with others. Thank you.

Just what happens when and if you die? The Bible teaches that everyone has what could be called an “identity seed”. As Mormon Christians we would call this the “Human spirit”. It contains the intellect of man but it also contains the individual and gifted personality. Heavenly Father has created each and every one of us with our own individual personality. While on planet earth we develop character. As Christians we allow the Holy Spirit to help guide our thoughts and actions. Our minds do things in the order of “thoughts”, “feelings” and “actions”. SOCT calls this the TFA doctrine and you can read about it in other SOCT papers. ~

The spirit of man on a deeper sense is still “not the man”. Inside the spirit gift of life is a smaller particle called the identity seed. This is like a mold which contains the individual personality and it records everything that we are and that we experience. ~

The Bible teaches that to the living death appears to be like a deep sleep. In other words for those of us left alive looking at a dead loved one it looks as though they are in a deep sleep, even lifeless. The Bible does teach that in this sense death is like a sleep until the resurrection. On the side of the dead person they are experiencing something very different. If they have accepted Jesus Christ as their savior and have understood the atonement their spirit (identity seed) goes to a location that is non-material and where time is experienced very differently than down here in our physical world. ~

If they are true Christians they will go to a location known as Paradise. Here their spirits will await what we on planet earth call “the second coming of Jesus Christ”. The wicked and or those who have not yet heard or accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ will go to “spirit prison”. This is a location in the spirit world where they will wait for the second coming of Jesus Christ. We must understand that latter-day revelation has revealed to us that time goes by much more quickly in the spirit world than how we here in our material bodies experience time. In this sense they are ahead of us, they are actually in our future. ~

Between us [in the material world] and them [those in the spirit world] there is what is referred to as “the veil”. This is a very thin separation between the material world and the spiritual world. This means that our loved ones are not far from us. What do these spirits look like? They have spiritual bodies, forms, just as mortals do but they are not physical forms. All of these spirits are in adult form at around what we would call the age of 33. This is the prime age of all spirit beings. Jesus was our example and when He died on the cross He was 33 years of age. ~

The Book of Mormon teaches that at death “…the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow.” – Alma 40:12 ~
Again, we must understand that to us who are alive left and remaining we see our dead loved ones as simply being asleep until the resurrection of the dead and there is more than one resurrection according to scripture. ~

The Book of Mormon teaches this about the wicked who die: “…that the spirits of the wicked, yea, who are evil – for behold, they have no part nor portion of the Spirit of the Lord; for behold, they chose evil works rather than good; therefore the spirit of the devil did enter into them, and take possession of their house – and these shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth, and this because of their own iniquity, being led captive by the will of the devil.” – Alma 40:13 ~

Spirits are doing work

Latter-day revelation tells us that those spirits in Paradise are doing work. They can appear to some people on earth as angels [spirit messengers and guides]. To do this they most come back into our time zone. They must to some extent go back in time, remember, time is experienced much faster in the spirit world. Some in Paradise are also allowed to go into the spirit prison to aid those who wish to learn the gospel of Jesus Christ. ~

Baptism for the Dead

Another very interesting authority has been given to us here on planet earth regarding those in the spirit world. For those in our family whom we know did not accept the gospel of Jesus Christ we can stand proxy for them, in place of them here on earth and perform a temple baptism for them. They will then receive the knowledge that one was baptized for them and they can accept it and become Christians and enter into Paradise and ultimately God’s kingdom of heaven. ~

Can a dead person return to this earth in our time?

Yes. Some who have “crossed the veil” can return to us as messengers [angels]. They can help guide and protect us as God allows. What about reincarnation? Latter-day revelation has revealed to us that in some rare cases spirits can in fact gain a new physical body to perform some special task in the great plan of Heavenly Father but this is in fact rarer than one might think. ~

We must understand that God’s church exists also in the spirit world and priesthood holders are still doing work in the spirit world, the gospel is still being taught and proclaimed.

We must be careful

When it comes to us here in the physical realm we must be careful. Whenever a spirit being tries to contact us or appear to us we must “test the spirits” to see whether they are from God or not. Satan can appear as a dead loved one to deceive. Satan can in fact “appear as an angel of light”. How do we test the spirits” If they say or do anything contrary to the revealed Word of God and if they do or say anything that would direct us away from Jesus Christ and the gospel we must rebuke that spirit in the name of Jesus Christ for it is not of God. ~

Please continue to study here at SOCT. We will continue to reveal much more regarding these topics. Read, pray, share. ~

~May you gain peace profound.
